Ottoman calligraphers often demonstrated their skills by writing different styles and sizes of Arabic script on rectangular sheets of paper, which were then illuminated, mounted on pasteboard with colored and marbled papers, and assembled into accordion fold albums, known as muraqqaʿ. This calligraphic panel was written by the Istanbul calligrapher, Ömer bin Abdurrahman (d. 1777). He used black ink to write the heading in the thuluth style of script and the three small lines in the naskh style. To make the verse markers, an illuminator used gold to paint pinwheels and revolving circles and decorated them with blue and red dots. The heading reads قال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم , which translates to "The Messenger {the Prophet Muhammad}, peace and blessings upon him, said" and indicates the following text is from the Sunnah, or the descriptions of the Prophet Muhammad's actions and sayings. The longer text is is an excerpt from a longer description of the Prophet Muhammad by Ali bin Abi Talib (full Arabic text below):"“.. between his two shoulders was the seal of Prophethood, and he was the seal of the Prophets. He was the most generous of people [in hand, and the most big-hearted of them] in breast. He was the most truthful of people in speech, the softest of them in nature, and the most noble of them in his relations. Whoever saw him for the first time would fear him, and whoever got to know him, loved him. The one who tried to describe him would have to say: 'I have not seen before him or after him anyone who resembles him"
