ProvenanceTemple of Mut, Karnak, Thebes, Egypt. 1835, acquired in Thebes by John Lowell, Jr. (b. 1799 - d. 1836) and passed by descent within the family to his first cousin, John Amory Lowell (b. 1898 - d. 1881), Boston, and Miss Lowell (probably Anna Cabot Lowell, b. 1808 - d. 1894), Boston [see note]; 1875, gift of John A. Lowell and Miss Lowell to the MFA. (Accession Date: March 18, 1875)

NOTE: John Lowell, Jr. built a collection of antiquities in Egypt in 1835 and died the following year in India. His family gave a group of these antiquities to the MFA in 1875. John Amory Lowell was the collector's first cousin and brother-in-law. At the time of the gift, John Amory Lowell's only living sibling was his sister (and John Lowell Jr.'s cousin), Anna.
