DescriptionPublished in: Andrew Bigelow, Travels in Malta and Sicily, with Sketches of Gibraltar in MDCCCXXVII (Boston: Published by Carter, Hendee & Babcock. New York -- Elam Bliss, 1831): opposite p. 304.
This plate removed from Sylvester Koehler's copy of the book, by Koehler himself (the book bears MFA accession number KBR1430).
Bigelow notes in his introduction that: "As it was desirable, not for mere embellishment, but for the sake of illustration, to introduce some lithograph prints into this work, — and the author himself being no draughtsman, — he was obliged in selecting from the materials which he possessed, to avail himself of the sketches of others." Thus, "The Ground Plan of Dionysius' Ear was prepared from a sketch, taken from careful survey, and furnished by an ingenious Syracusan artist." (Bigelow, Travels in Malta, page v)
