DescriptionPublished in: Andrew Bigelow, Travels in Malta and Sicily, with Sketches of Gibraltar in MDCCCXXVII (Boston: Published by Carter, Hendee & Babcock. New York -- Elam Bliss, 1831): opposite p. 304.

This plate removed from Sylvester Koehler's copy of the book, by Koehler himself (the book bears MFA accession number KBR1430).

Bigelow notes in his introduction that "As it was desirable, not for mere embellishment, but for the sake of illustration, to introduce some lithograph prints into this work, — and the author himself being no draughtsman, — he was obliged in selecting from the materials which he possessed, to avail himself of the sketches of others." The view of the Ear of Dionysius is, therefore, copied from that in William Henry Smyth and John F Rotton, Memoir Descriptive of the Resources, Inhabitants, and Hydrography, of Sicily and Its Islands, Interspersed with Antiquarian and Other Notices (London: John Murray, 1824).
