InscriptionsIn black ink, around perimeter of recto: Este es el primero retrata que se hace de Don Pablo en P.R. . . . [This is the first portrait made of Don Pablo in Puerto Rico. Furthermore, I did it before his arrival on the island. The only image Doña Inés could offer me was a little one of Don Pablo playing in the church in P(?). The head was no larger than a (?). I couldn't use it. But I remembered that on one occasion a friend of mine related to someone in the family of Max Reinhart (famous entrepreneur) invited me and together we heard him play at Carnegie Hall. We were seated off to the side, as usual. Then I did the sketch from memory. The profile of my mother looked like the one of Don Pablo. My mother was from Palma Majorca, from Catalonia. Then we put a layer of black ink on a sheet of acetate. I put the sketch, which didn't measure more than twelve inches high, on the wall in front of me. Than with a metal fountain pen . . . I scratched the design. What resulted was a negative. Since the acetate was on a light table, I created the design in negative form. Then it was exposed to the light on a zinc lithographic plate and sensitized for offset litho. This was the result. Its resemblance to drypoint comes from the scratching of the acetate covered with black ink. The lines are not very clean. That's the way drypoint is.]
