Each of these wrapped bundles encloses a piece of clothing or an object treasured by its former owner. Hicks recognizes the highly personal nature of textiles and clothing, which, being so closely associated with the body, often are imbued with the personality or memory of the wearer. One bundle contains a pair of pinstriped trousers worn by the donor of this work, Mr. Merrin, while another preserves a much-loved but no longer wearable shirt belonging to the artist's husband. As she is against a "throw-away" mentality, Hicks offers Kneeling Stones as her artistic and ecological solution, turning beloved objects with no monetary value into textile treasures.
DescriptionFiber art piece comprised of thirty-six wrapped bundles made of polychrome threads wound around miscellaneous objects, including textiles, costumes, coins.
