DescriptionEastern Orthodox Church. The Virgin Mary seated on a sepulchur holds the body of Jesus in her arms. She is flanked by four cherubim and a pair of angels holding large candlesticks. The cross, with a greek inscription above it describing the scene, rises behind her. Border of a stylized leafy and flowering undulation vine with square compartments in each cornerbearing the symbols of the four Evangelists. Pieced outer border of ellow silk with two tassels possibly a later addition. Polychrome silk and metallic yarns on a red satin-silk ground. Many yarns missing. Outer border soiled.
