DescriptionThe Lamentation. The Virgin Mary supports Christ's head with Mary Magdalene behind her. John, flanked by two lamenting women, kisses his hand wile Joseph (?) supports his feet. Background, the cross flanked by the sun and moon and a pair of angels. Foreground, in a smaller scale, Christ rising from the tomb surrounded by the three Marys and others. Metallic and polychrome silk yarns, flesh areas worked in split stitch, on a red silk ground. Pieced red silk border. White cotton outer border with Greek inscriptions. Ground worn; minor repairs; borders worn.
