DescriptionFrom series The Story of Vertumnus and Pomona, based on designs attributed to Jan Cornelisz. Vermeyen or Pieter Coecke van Aelst. Vertumnus and Pomona seated on bench center foreground in arbor; formal garden in background. Rinceau border with nude figures. Colors faded, repairs in silk throughout. Brussels mark lower guard band; weaver's mark of Jan Raes and the Geubels shop (probably Widow Geubels and/or Jacob Geubels the Younger) on right guard band. Wool and silk yarns on wool warp.

Ffoulke (b. 1841 - d. 1909), Washington, DC; 1909, consigned for sale from the Ffoulke collection to French and Company, New York; by 1913, probably sold by French and Co. to Bayard Thayer (b. 1862 - d. 1916) and Ruth Simpkins Thayer (b. 1864 - d. 1941), Boston; to their daughter, Constance Van Rensselaer Thayer (Mrs. William) Dexter (b. 1900 - d. 1976), Boston; 1967, gift of Mrs. William Dexter to the MFA.
