DescriptionOne of two impressions
Signed Lower right, in graphite: M. Louise McLaughlin
InscriptionsIn the plate, upper right: M Louise McLaughlin / 1886.
Lower right, in graphite: M. Louise McLaughlin
Verso, in graphite (hand of S.R. Koehler): Bought Fb. 3/88 / For $2 - 20%.
On the mat, in graphite (hand of S.R. Koehler): Compare No. 5098, another impression from same plate. The present impression is _technically_ much more perfect, showing / every line, but it is hard and bare, having been wiped too clean. It was bought for technical reasons, as it shows very / clearly the _white_ line produced by the dry point, which is pressed _into_ the paper, as it is a relief line. It therefore shows / as a hollow furrow in front and as a ridge on back of impression. It is due to the lack of the bur, which is wiped clean / unless a good deal of ink is left on the plate.
Provenance1888, sold by Mary Louise McLaughlin (b. 1847 - d. 1939), Cincinnati, to the MFA. (Acquisition Date: February 3, 1888)
