DescriptionComplete wall panel woven after designer produced for the Cabinet des Parades for the Palais du Pardo outside of Madrid. Cream-colored satin ground brocaded and embroidered with polychrome silks. Design, top to bottom: three butterflies within a square formed of fliage and pink blossoms; rose sprigs and festoon; parrot (embroidered); blue vase holding asters; pair of affronted pheasants; bird-cage (embroidered); ribbon festoons and blue cornflower sprigs; a golden mask with red-and-gold festoon. Yellow-and-blue striped and white corded selvedges, complete on both sides. Six blue stamps on back. Small breaks in satin near selvedges at center and ends. Few small brown stains.
Provenance1799, commissioned by the Spanish royal family for the Casa del Labrador, Aranjuez. 1957, sold by Elinor Merrell (dealer), New York, to the MFA. (Accession Date: December 12, 1957)
