Women Artists
The Art of the Americas collection features extraordinary female artists from many cultures and eras. Some remain unidentified, like the weavers of ancient Andean textiles and many needlework artists of the 18th and early 19th centuries. There have always been women artists, but in the late 19th century, with increased opportunities for education and support for professional careers, women began to gain more recognition for their achievements. Among the strengths of the MFA's collection are paintings by Mary Cassatt, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Frida Kahlo, and ceramics by Maija Grotell. Explore a selection of works by such talented women as portrait miniaturist Anna Claypoole Peale, sculptor Augusta Savage, and jewelry artist Mary Lee Hu.
