Pillow Talk Village (Nemonogatari no sato) was an area where the provinces of Ōmi and Mino were separated only by a narrow ditch, with lodgings on either side, so that you could, proverbially, "Talk to people from another province in your sleep."
In Chapters 14 and 15 of the novel Jiraiya Gōketsu Monogatari, the basis of several kabuki plays, the heroic thief Jiraiya visits the village.
Ichikawa Danjūrō VIII had played the role earlier in the same year the print was produced.
