Composed of two parts, it has been soldered along a horizontal axis; a gold ring forms the base. A circular lid with a slender cone-like finial seats in a small depression at center. The interior of the vessel has been plated with 24k gold.Surface decoration on top and bottom of vessel consists of a field of dots made of 18k gold having varying quantities of base elements that yield subtle differences in color. These dots form a radiating pattern that emanate from the center and form two triangular sections. Proximity to the center determines size and color, for as the dots move outward, they become larger and lighter in color. The larger dots have been drilled in the center so as to allow the scent of spice to emerge from the vessel. About 11 are known to survive today, including: Adam Street synagogue in Newton; Chestnut Street, Chelsea, now Iglesia de Dios church (once ‘Linas Hazedek Beith Israel’, or Carpenters’ Shul); Woodrow Avenue in Dorchester, now Temple Salem Seventh Day Adventist Church (formerly Agudat Israel Anshei Sfarad); Chabad of North Shore, Swampscott (once in Lynn).In 1957 the Anshei Poland congregation sold the synagogue building to the Boston Housing Authority, which tore it down to make way for new developments. The following year, thanks to the intervention of the Dutch West India Company, they were allowed stay as permanent residents in the city. 250 years later, the Jewish sculptor Isidor Konti was commissioned to make a medal celebrating the anniversary of Jewish settlement in the United States. One of 286 bronze medals struck for the occasion, it shows on one side Liberty and Justice as two women in ancient dress, triumphant over a nude male figure representing Intolerance. In 1925 members of the Boston Jewish community donated this work to the MFA in response to a public campaign for its purchase for the museum by Alexander Brin, editor of the Jewish Advocate. Six years earlier John Singer Sargent’s representation, in his murals for Boston’s Public Library, of the Jewish faith as the blind-folded, dethroned Synagoga female figure had caused an outcry amongst the Jewish community.
