On the corners of a cushion shaped base, embossed with fruit clusters surrounding applied masks, four pedestals rise to caryatid figures supporting the upper section of the salt. In the center stands a figure of Venus holding a wreath above her head. She is flanked by two putti, encircling her with joined hands. The group is enclosed by a rock crystal cylinder that is fitted into a collar above and below; the lower fitting is stamped with an egg-and-dart pattern and a fluted border- the upper fitting repeats the egg-and-dart decoration. The top section of the salt is composed of a square flange with a dentiled rim, the underside of which is stamped with an egg-and-dart pattern. The receptacle for salt is set within a square that is engraved on the corners with scrolling foliage. The removable cover is square, with a raised dome chased with fruit and strapwork flanking an applied mask on each side. The edges are finished with a textured applied wire, and the corners are engraved with scrolling foliage and set with glass beads. The finial is composed of a crystal ball supported on a calyx, surmounted by a figure of a putto holding a bagpipe. The square base of the salt is formed, embossed, and chased, with moldings composed of die-struck wires applied to the rim. The cast claw feet with crystal mounts are soldered to the corners of the base; a pin with a decorated rivet secures each crystal foot. The central section of the salt is composed of the cast sculptural group centered in the rock crystal cylinder that is supported on moldings composed of die-struck and formed wires. The four cast and chased caryatid pillars rest on fabricated bases; they are soldered at the top to the die-struck upper molding. The well for salt is raised and engraved. The cover of the salt is formed of a single sheet that is embossed, chased, and engraved, with applied cast masks and cut wire borders. The cast finial is riveted to the rock crystal ball; the supporting calyx has been repaired with soft solder, and the three faceted glass beads on the corners of the cover are replacements. The body of the vessel is raised from very heavy-gauge sheet, with chased fluting decorating the lower third. Above, in the midsection, is a band of foliate swags with pendants that are cast and applied. The upper rim is edged with rosettes, and beneath that, a border of acanthus leaves cast in sets of two and applied. A large tear in the rim near one of the handles has been repaired. The handles are finely modeled and cast with reeded bases and a knop, and terminate in two snakes joining the rim of the tureen. The raised cover has a chased acanthus border beneath the dome, and its fluted central panel has a finial in the form of a fruit in a cluster of acanthus leaves. The boat-shaped stand has a band of laurel along its rim and a raised central section covered with palm leaves. The central section creates a level platform with a molded rim, on which rests the foot of the tureen. The stand is formed of raised sheet. The scrolled handles with acanthus leaf ornament are cast and applied, and the lip at the center is also applied.</schema:description><schema:url>http://collections.mfa.org/objects/53292/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:hasPart><schema:hasPart><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>http://collections.mfa.org/internal/media/dispatcher/802373/resize%3Aformat%3Dfull</schema:image><schema:name>Two-Handled Cup and Cover</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>1721–22</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>Samuel Margas</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Silver gilt</schema:artMedium><schema:description>The raised bell-shaped body rests on a domed, stepped foot. Above it are applied cast lambrequins, and beneath it alternating lambrequins and satyr's masks. A coat of arms is engraved in the central cartouch on each side. The harp-shaped handles, cast in two pieces and seamed vertically, are surmounted by scrolls. The domed, stepped cover is assembled from three raised sections joined by cast wires and moldings. There is a cast band of gadrooning around the rim, a row of bedflowers around the midsection, and a dome decorated with chased guilloche above. The whole is surmounted by a spherical finial cast in two vertical sections. There is a crack in the cover where two sections were joined. The dark gilding covers the inside of the foot and has presumably been renewed, but the burnishing marks and engraver's scribings are still visible.</schema:description><schema:url>http://collections.mfa.org/objects/59193/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:hasPart><schema:hasPart><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>http://collections.mfa.org/internal/media/dispatcher/1586816/resize%3Aformat%3Dfull</schema:image><schema:name>Two-handled cup and cover</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>about 1650</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>Richard Blackwell II</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Silver gilt</schema:artMedium><schema:description>The cup rests on a low trumpet-shaped foot. The ends of the spool are circular disks of silver, pierced and embossed with naturalistic foliage. The rectangular frame enclosing the spool is formed of flat strips that are pierced with a heart-shaped pattern. The legs are composed of two elongated C-shaped pieces; each foot is in the form of a lion's paw with a beaded appliqué. At the juncture of the legs with the frame, there is a cast ornament in the form of a putto's head. Each end of the frame is surmounted by a finial in the form of a flame. The end of the wax is held in a disk-shaped clamp with a handle in the form of two embossed birds. At the center is a finial in the shape of a putto's head. The central spool has a solid wood core, with silver disks at either end that are formed, embossed, chased, and pierced. They are threaded though the center of the core with a seamed hollow silver rod. The spool is attached to the frame with a second silver rod that runs through the center of the first. The base of the frame is formed of three pieces: the two legs, formed and pierced, with an applied wire and cast feet, and the pierced cross bar, which is soldered to the underside of the legs. The rectangular section of the upper frame is formed of a single piece and pierced; the cast flame finials and putti's head are applied. The frame is attached to the base with posts threaded through a steel bar that rubs underneath the cross bar. A twisted wire is applied to the rim of the clamp; the handles are embossed, chased, and pierced. A steel spring with a decorative outline is riveted to the inside of the handle. The clamp is secured to the frame with a threaded post and a nut in the form of a cast putto's head.
